Tutorial- How to geotag your website or blog

You can geotag your website by going to http://geourl.org/?and adding your site to their database. Geotagging is useful if you’ve got a relatively small blog and would like to know blogs/websites around you and socialize with them. Mind you, geotagging is interesting if you specify your physical location rather than that of your server, For example, I am located in India but my hosting provider is based in US. So it doesn’t make sense for me to show myself in USA. Anyway, here’s how you can geotag your website.

1) Goto http://www.maporama.com/

2) Search for you city, state and country. I chose New Bombay, India

3) Once the map loads, on the bottom left corner, there will be an information header which will show your city’s Latitude-Longitude information like this:

Lat-Long:	?
18? 59′ , 72? 49′
18.997 , 72.818

We are interested in the second, decimal-based information.

4) GeoURL recognizes in the following format in your website header:

<META NAME="ICBM" CONTENT="XXX.XXXXX, XXX.XXXXX">
<META NAME="DC.title" CONTENT="THE NAME OF YOUR SITE">

5) Substitute your Lat-Long information in =?XXX.XXXXX, XXX.XXXXX? like this:

6) Substitute your site’s name in =”THE NAME OF YOUR SITE” like this:

7) In the header section of your website, enter the information under . (Hint: If you are using Wordpress, it’ll be in the header.php file of your theme template)

8) Go to the GeoURL ping form at http://geourl.org/ping?and submit your website.

9) If successfully implemented, GeoURL will show in a box below:

You can now see your “neighbors”.
Ping done at 12/30/05 10:16:34+0000.

refresh status

10) Click on see your “neighbors” to see websites located near you. If it shows you the websites from the correct city, country, you’ve successfully implemented geotagging for your website.
