If you’ve seen Outlook/Activesync hanging when synchronizing more than a day of emails with Microsoft Activesync 4, one reason this could be happening is if you have the PGP add-in installed for Outlook and have it enabled to decrypt/verify emails when opening messages. You can disable the option for Activesync to work properly.
