Oops, sorry, remove the "I then copied back MAPI32_EUDORA.DLL onto MAPI32.DLL." from my previous message. otherwise ActiveSync does not launch. Anyway Eudora still works with original MAPI32.DLL.

You don't need to make outlook your default program if you don't want to.
I had the same problem and after reading this thread, I simply went in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ then renamed MAPI32.DLL as MAPI32_EUDORA.DLL (to keep a copy). I then had a MAPI32.000 (previous version prior to Eudora installation), I renamed as MAPI32_OUTLOOK.DLL (just to save a copy and then copied it to MAPI32.DLL.
Thereafter the installation worked. All that time Eudora was on (but I did not use it) with MAPI still selected as Always use.
I then copied back MAPI32_EUDORA.DLL onto MAPI32.DLL.

when I try to install activesync 4.5 on my pc for my tmobile dash, it installs half way then says it can not complete because a DLL file could not be run. what does it mean? I am using windows XP, microsoft outlook office, there is also outlook express on my pc. I know outlook express is not compatible

I had the same problem with ActiveSync 4.1 and 4.5, even though Eudora wasn't running at the time. Followed the suggested fix and 4.5 installs perfectly. Thanks!

I had the same error messages, had Eudora 7.0 set to always use MAPI, renamed MAPI32 as Remove_MAPI32 launched Outlook (I don't use it yet) and it prompted me to fix a problem (guess it was fixing MAPI32... it did the trick (Eudora was running all this time) and the install worked... shame I can't sync my SPV M600 with yahoo calendar :(
