At my school we use Barracuda Web Filter and unfortunately, it does a pretty good job. None of the above steps seem to work either. So, can anyone help?

<a href="http://mytube.mywebbie.com" title="MyTube" rel="nofollow">Here's the solution to watch youtube behind firewalls!</a>

Just insert the youtube video url into the form and wait while it fetches the video..

This should work in a scenrio where a web filter like WebSense is installed. I personally browse Box.net, Rapidshare, Megaupload using the 2nd trick behind Websense.

July 26, 2006:

This post tries to cover 2 topics:
 - getting a direct URL for videos hosted by YouTube.com
 - bypassing some network traffic control mechanisms

I keep getting "HTTP 404: Not Found" when trying to directly download video files on YouTube (ie, from the example URL in this post: http://www.youtube.com/get_video.php?video_id=49IDp76kjPw )

And as for the ping "trick", I can't imagine a setup where that'd actually do what you're wanting it to.
"ping" just sends out certain "ICMP" (it's like TCP and UDP) packets which a well behaved site will respond to. The whole point is to see if the computer in question is alive and responding to network traffic.
Of course, if you give "ping" a DNS name like "www.youtube.com", then it has to do a DNS lookup to get the IP# before it can even start to send packets.
A better way of doing this on all Unixes and Linuxes and all versions of Windows after Win2k is with "nslookup".
"nslookup" just does DNS queries and doesn't bother to try to send out those ICMP packets.

But in any case, the only benefit you're getting from "ping" is using it to do a DNS lookup instead of your web browser.
