I’ve always wondered why Motorola has been so successfully with its clam shelled phones in US. I personally hate clam-shelled phones. I feel they just don’t look smart enough.
From the S60 Blog:
Star Trek. All Americans grew up watching Star Trek. We all wanted to be Captain Kirk. Remember the “mobile phones” they used on Star Trek? Weren’t they basically clamshell phones (always set to loudspeaker mode)? *THAT’S* why Americans love the clamshells so much.
Another interesting reason in the comments was:
Flip phones prevent unintended calls from being made. Americans can’t figure out how to lock the keys on non-flip phones. Well, maybe that’s a bit harsh, but in all seriousness every person I’ve asked with a flip “why did you get that phone” responded with that as an answer.
So now you know!

1Finally! Someone agrees with me! I hate flip phones so much!. It’s just a trend that got out of control. What I really hate is when people have to slam them shut just to draw attention to the fact that they have a flip phone. Why can’t all carriers carry at least 1 regular phone for us?
