Recently, Nokia introduced a Phone Software Update utility which allows Nokia S60 mobile owners to update the firmware of their devices via USB or Over the Air (currently not available for any device). Earlier, one had to take the device to a Nokia authorized service center to do the upgrade.
So here’s a step by step on how to upgrade your phone’s firmware via USB:
1) Download and install Phone Software Update utility from Nokia’s website
2) Optionally, take a backup of your phone’s memory using PC Suite or on the phone itself (under Tools/Memory/Backup phone memory to memory card)
3) Make sure the phone is fully charged up. Then connect your device to the USB cable (choose PC Suite mode for S60 3rd Ed devices) and open Nokia Update utility from Start–>All Programs. Also make sure you connect power cable to the phone in case the battery drains out.
4) Hit the Start button on the utility. It will search for updates on Nokia’s server
5) If it finds an update, the software will inform “New Software update available”
6) Hit the Update button and it will start downloading the update from Nokia (the writing process hasn’t begun yet)
7) After the download completes, it will show the progress on the screen “Updating the software”. Important: Do not disconnect the device under any circumstances as this will case the update to fail and ender your mobile useless.
That’s it. Now the firmware has been updated and you may (optionally) restore the backup through PC Suite.
