The Modern Day Alchemist Blog brings to notice a nice service called plus-addressing that works with Google’s Gmail service wherein you can add a plus sign after your GMail email address and add a word to it and it will still come to your Inbox. For example if your email is test@gmail.com, you can still receive email at test+work@gmail.com. Therefore, you can create filters based on these email addresses and redirect email to different folders in GMail. You can even signup for a service/mailing list with an email such as test+servicename@gmail.com and create a filter for it so that you know if the service/mailing list send you spam.
