From Intel’s website, UPnP technology is a distributed, open networking architecture that employs TCP/IP and other Internet technologies to enable seamless proximity networking, in addition to control and data transfer among networked devices in the home, office, and public spaces. Some of the things you can do with UPnp is

Discover other devices on the network
Remotely control appliances
Share information among devices and the World Wide Web

Nokia N80 is one of the first smartphones to support this technology.

Setting up the server side (your desktop PC where you will stream data):

1) Before installing the Home media Server software, you need to install the UPnp service if it isn’t installed yet

For UPnP to work, you need to install it:
1. Go to Start => Control Panel.
2. Add or Remove Programs.
3. Add/Remove Windows Components.
4. In the list, select the Networking Services check box, and then click Details.
5. In the Subcomponents list, select the UPnP User Interface check box, and then click OK.
6. In the Windows Components Wizard, click Next.
Windows will install the UPnP service.

2) Do a Windows Update

3) Download and install the Home Media Server PC software from your Nokia N80 CD or from SimpleCenter

4) After the installation is completed, open the home media server software and go to “Settings” then “Server”and make sure that the “Enable Media Server” check box is selected.

5) On your WiFI WLAN router, go to the config page, UPnp Services and enable UPnP. Also Go to ?Wireless? and select ?Wireless Security? on your router config page and note down the WPA Shared Key

6) If you’ve got a firewall, make sure you open the requisite ports for Home Media Server UPnP.
-Best way to find this out would be to launch Home Media Server. Once Home Media Server has started, open the Settings panel by clicking the Settings icon in the right top corner of Home Media Server window. Click the Server tab. Note the four port numbers displayed on this screen, in the Firewall Information box. Note: If fewer than four port numbers appear on your screen, close the Settings window and then reopen it. This box should display four port numbers.
-Better still, disable the Firewall and reboot your computer for the first time as you might face a lot of problems later.

7) Restart your PC and Nokia N80 and launch Home Media Server software. This software has to be running in the background as long as you want to access your files from your Nokia N80

Setting the Nokia N80 client side:

1) Press Menu and go to ?Connect.?
2) Open ?Home network? and go to ?Settings.?
3) Go to ?Home Access Point? and choose ?user defined.?
4) Under Connection name give your network a name like: ?Home? or “UPnP”
5) Data bearer should be ?Wireless LAN?
6) Under ?Wireless network name? select ?Search for network? and when it finds your WLAN network, select it.
7) Network status is ?Hidden?
8) WLAN Network Mode is ?Infrastructure? -optional (In your routers settings the connection between the Router and PC you be in infrastructure mode?)
9) WLAN security mode should be set for ?WPA/WPA2? - Optional (In your routers settings the connection between the router and pc?s should be WPA or WPA2)
10) Go into ?WLAN security settings?

15) The network that you just setup should be selected, in our example it was “HOME? or “UPnP”. Choose ?options? and click ?select?.
16) It gives you a prompt that ?The home network features are available? and choose ?Ok?.
17) Go to ?Share content? and for Images and video and Music choose ?All files?
18) Hit back and go into Settings and under Content sharing select ?ON?
Bith UPNP and WLAN internet connections are enabled or disabled here
19) Open browser and try to surf. It will just go to search for WLAN. But close the browser and wait a while. After that you will be able to choose your home network to surf.
20) For UPNP, Go to Galleries and scroll to Home Network and it will search for the devices, make sure Nokia media server is running on your PC.

The settings on Nokia N80 may very depending on your router configuration. Consult your router documentation. The things I’ve mentioned are optional i.e. they depend if you’ve selected the enhanced security settings on your router.
