Compass is a freeware application for Java J2ME based mobiles that allows you to use your mobile phone as a compass to find out the North direction. You acn do this by rotating the phone so that the sun and/or moon icons match their actual location in the sky.
From the website FAQ,
Q: How can I be accurate when rotating my phone to match the sun?
A: While laying the phone flat and holding a toothpick perpendicular to the center of the screen, rotate the phone so that the shadow of the toothpick falls on the line through the sun.
Here are some of the existing and new features of this application
-Select location and destination using world map or airport code.
-Automatic daylight saving time adjustment.
-Load and save favorite locations or destinations.
-Display heading, distance, and local time of destination.
-Set arbitrary date and time.
-12 hour or 24 hour time display option.
-Displays times of sunrise, sunset, sun transit, moonrise, moonset, civil twilight, nautical twilight, and astronomical twilight.
-Phase of moon indicated by crescent shaped icon.
This can turn out to be useful for travellers or Muslims who can find out the direction of Mecca/Qibla direction from their non GPS mobile
