Mozilla Labs has announced a new project called Joey that allows users to save and store important content and metadata such as audio, video, bookmarks, RSS feeds, pictures, text clippings, driving directions, maps and scorecards on Mozilla’s remote server and access them from a mobile device through the mobile phone’s browser or a Java based mobile application. The project is headed by Doug Turner who previously was in charge of the Minimo browser for Windows Mobile devices.

A user needs to sign up for the Joey service and download a free addon for Firefox. The add-on displays a small icon in the lower right-hand corner of the web browser. When surfing on any Web site, the user can click that icon and choose “Joey Summary Capture.” The user can then drag the cursor around the Web page to select text, images or any type of content such as Flash, Videos, etc that will be stored on the server and create a title for the saved content whcih will be displayed when you sign in to your account along with the date and time it was uploaded.

The information is transcoded and optimized for mobile devices and then uploaded to Joey’s servers from where it can be accessed from a mobile device using the mobile phone browser or the Java J2ME based mobile application provided.
