Pimpware has released the first version of PeeJay MIDP, a free software for Sony’s PlayStation Portable gaming device that allows you to install JAR/JAD files and play Java games meant for Nokia S60, Sony Ericsson UIQ or Motorola mobiles on your Sony PSP. The application supports MIDP 2.0 profile with full color support. It is still in its nascent stage and therefore can play only certain demos from Sun Micro’s Java development kit.
How to Play?
Direction pad is mapped to 2, 4, 6, 8 numeric. Right and Left Trigger map to a Java game’s right and left menu buttons (similiar to soft keys on Smartphones). Cross is mapped to the enter/select key.
How to add mobile java games?
You need to download and install the Java J2ME devkit. Install a game on the emulator using http, then copy the appdb directory contents to /PSP/MIDLET/appdb on your PSP.
Since many native Java features are yet to be implemented, I am looking forward to the next release which would hopefully play full Java mobile games.
