Whatis defines Self-destructing email as an electronic mail that vanishes or becomes unreadable after a certain length of time or upon the request of the sender. They also help prevent printing, copying, forwarding, and saving of the email sent and auto expire after a predefined interval.
An embarassing email sent years ago might come to haunt you today just when you thought it must have been deleted permanently. Self Destructing emails delete the original message once it has been read by the recipient. While they are not completely fool proof, for example, someone can take a photo of the message with the camera, the record on the Internet does not remain.
Here are a few self destructing email providers that you might find useful for sending emails. Some even provide free plug-ins for sending emails through a desktop based email client such as Outlook or Thunderbird.
+ Self-Destructing-Email.com: Allows you to send email from webmail by adding .self-destructing-email.com to the end of the recipient’ email address. They also provide a free plug-in called ActiveTracker for desktop email clients such as Outlook, Thunderbird, Opera Mail, Outlook Express and even Webmail [link]
+ WillSelfDestruct: This site enables you to create a one-time secure web page for a recipient. You can create a secure anonymous email message to a friend or colleague by entering their e-mail address and the message. The recipient will receive an e-mail with a link to a one-time secure web page which they will be able to view once and only once. Once the url has been accessed the message is deleted.
+ KickNotes: Allows you to create an email message that will self destruct based on how many times the message is read or the age of the message.
+ BigString: BigString is a free service allows a user to easily send, recall, erase, self-destruct and modify an email after it has been sent. BigString users have unprecedented control over all of their email, whether they choose to send it through the BigString.com website or an email client such as Outlook.
+ Kablooey Mail: Kablooey Mail offers features similiar to BigString such as recalling or “retract”ing a message after it has been sent, self destructing based on number of times a message has been erad or age of the email, and blocking the recipient from copying the message, forwarding the message, printing the message. A plug-in is being developed that will allow using their service through any email client.
+ ZMail Basic: Allows you to specify a Release Time wherein a message cannot be read before the time you define, Expiration Time wherein an email cannot be read after the time you define and Delivery reciept which shows When, Where, How and by Whom your message was decrypted
+ StealthMessage: Stealth Message allows encryption of email mesages, stores encrypted messsages anonymously, set self-destructing options, prevent forwarding and copying of messages
+ SD Message: Web based service that allows you to send messages that will self destruct within 60 seconds of viewing
+ DestructingMessage: Online service that generated a link which contains your message and can be self destroyed after the timer expires.
+ VaporStream: VaporStream is a paid service that separates the header of the message, the who, what and where, from the body of the message. They never exist together and can never be seen together; there is no record connecting the VaporStream subscriber with the content of the message. You also cannot print, cut and paste, forward or save a stream. You can trust that once you read a message it is gone.

1Great blog. Personally, I think email security and privacy is a huge issue. All we seem to get from the major webmail providers (yahoo mail, gmail, hotmail, aol mail) is more storage. If anything, they are increasing my liability by indexing and storing my messages for decades. Nice to see companies addressing this potential catastrophe. It’s like global warming, just staring most of us in the face. Maybe Al Gore can next support individual privacy rights.
In addition to trying some of the above services, I signed up for a free email account at BigString.com last year. My experience has been very good. They seem to have fixed issues from last year and keep improving the site. In addition to the recall, erase, self-destruct features described, here are some additional features you might find useful. Hope it helps.
Free email account - they give 4GB of storage. I’m still below 1GB. And free email accounts with more features than anyone else? Can’t be beat.
Easy signup - didn’t ask for my life’s history. They take privacy seriously.
Self-destructible timers - emails can be recalled at any time, with a setting based on views, days, or even a Mission Impossible feature that self-destructs while the recipient is reading, which is pretty cool. My friends keep asking how I can do that.
Non-copying/Non-printable/Non-forwardable - prevents my messages from being forwarded. It’s like my own digital rights management (drm) system.
Tracking - I always check when (and how often) my recipient has opened my mail before following-up with a call. And when I don’t restrict forwarding, I can tell if they forwarded my email.
Video email - my family loves getting personal video messages. It’s built right into the email.
Emailing and storing large files - Up to 25 MB on send, and 2GB of storage I think. Some of my PDFs and spreadsheets are over 10MB, so this is a great solution to an ftp site. *Note: My recipients are usually limited to receiving 10MB, based on their email. When this is an issue, I call the recipients and have them open a bigstring.com free email account. Solves the problem and gives them a great service.
Contact management - it was very easy to import my contacts from my ISP, which made switching a breeze. One of the best.
Easy and anonymous - it works across all email systems and email programs. Very intuitive. I don’t need to do anything special.
I think those are the coolest features, though they have many others. If anyone has used the business email accounts or email marketing, I’d be interested in your feedback. I heard the business accounts are suppose to have a good management center and that the email marketing lowers costs of traditional email marketing by 50%. That sounds pretty amazing. Considering all the features in BigString.com’s free email account, I’d like to know more.

2Um, screenshots? Look, if you can read an email, you can copy it. That’s just the way of the net. None of these can prevent a user from making a copy somehow, even if it’s just snapping a pic of the screen with their phone. I further wager that screenshots will capture ‘em, too, to say nothing of view-source in the browser, or cache inspection, or any of a dozen or more other methods.
Put not your trust in these things. There’s just no way they’re going to work reliably.

5Thanks! This list of services is quite useful. But the careful vagueness of their websites make me quite skeptical about using them often.
They can’t deliver your email to the recipient in the ordinary plain text usually used for an email message, since there is no way to make plain text “self-destructing” without special modifications to the recipient’s email software. So I presume they must be sending HTML with a hyperlink that the user needs to click on, or that automatically loads a page hosted on the service’s website containing your message.
If the recipient needs to click, that’s a big nuisance and takes it out of the flow of normal message reading. If the link loads automatically, then this is same system that spammers use to track which email address have live people reading them. So it is likely to be blocked by spam filters, or to otherwise display incorrectly.
Also, both schemes won’t work if your recipient tries to read his email when he’s not connected to the internet (e.g., if he downloads his mail before stepping on a plane). Or, quite possibly, it won’t self-destruct if the recipient’s mail client is configured to cache web content loaded by email messages. And lastly, as goes without saying, if you’re using these services to get a security guarantee on your content, you can trust that guarantee only as much as you trust the services.
Add up all these restrictions, and it sounds like these services might be good to know about for special circumstances, like sending login credentials to friends, but that they impose too much inconvenience on the recipient to be relied on for regular communication.
