NeoOffice is a fully featured, OpenOffice for Mac alternative Office Suite consisting of word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and drawing programs for Intel or PowerPC based Mac OSX computers with integrated support for native Mac applications not available in OpenOffice. The latest release of NeoOffice supports opening, editing and saving of Microsoft Office 2007 formats- Word (docx), Excel (xlsx) and Powerpoint (pptx). Since this application uses Java technology, there is no need to install X11 which is required by OpenOffice.
Othe features of NeoOffice for Mac include:
Native Mac OS X Spellchecker: Unlike OpenOffice.org, NeoOffice has an enhanced spellchecker that uses the Mac OS X spellchecking dictionary.
Native Mac OS X Address Book: Use the Mac OS X address book as a data source
Handles Microsoft Office 2007 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Files: Open, edit, and save most files in the Office 2007 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint formats.
Run Macros in Excel Files: Excel macro support
Native Aqua Menu: Unlike OpenOffice.org, NeoOffice has native Aqua menus, file open and save dialogs, print dialogs, buttons, scrollbars, and other items.
Uses Mac OS X fonts: Unlike OpenOffice.org, NeoOffice uses the same fonts that all of your other Mac OS X applications use
Native printing support: Use NeoOffice to print, preview, or save a document to a PDF file.
Native copy and paste support: NeoOffice supports copying and pasting using Mac OS X’s native clipboard so you can copy and paste text and images between NeoOffice and other Mac OS X applications.
Native drag-and-drop support: NeoOffice supports native drag-and-drop so you can drag and drop text and images between NeoOffice and other Mac OS X applications.

1Remember that the address book support has come from work done by the OpenOffice.org project through a google summer of code project.
