Geopepper Beta is a startup by Bell Labs / Alcatel-Lucent Ventures that provides a new type of location based SMS alerts messaging system called Geographic Messaging Service. GMS messages are delivered based on geographic targeting. Content is only sent once a user has entered the target zone - or geofence perimeter. You can create your own personal channel or subscribe to one by your friends or a third party service. Users can then start publishing content or events based on choice of geographic locations.
Currently, you can broadcast your location to the service using SMS text message only while Blackberry users can download a free mobile client that utilizes GPS.

While sending your location, you can specify details such as the zip code, city, state and landmarks to get more relevant content alerts. You can read the complete FAQs here.
Some of example of alerts that you can get are:
+ When your friends are in the same location as yourself
+ GMS Notes published by your contacts to try something in the location where you entered
+ Services in the vicinity published by some third party provider whom you’ve subscribed to
You can download the mobile client for Blackberry 8800 from www.geopepper.com/mobile or start using the service with any mobile device using SMS text messaging.

1Hi Abdul,
Thank you very much for covering geopepper.com on your blog.
[Disclaimer: I work on geopepper and just wanted to add some useful info for your readers.]
Blackberry 8800 users should also register at geopepper.com with the same phone number before the client can be effective in getting those text alerts. i.e., it is not sufficient to just download the client.
BTW, We also have BREW and J2ME clients (tested, for example, on some VZW LG and Boost phones, respectively) and are planning on bringing out a BB 8830 version. Anyone interested can contact us via the site. However, unlike Blackberry, there is no Over-the-air download support for these phones, yet.
PS: Geopepper is actually just one of many applications enabled by the GMS geofencing platform (patent-pending algorithms that minimize the impact on your battery/nw. please see our blogs if interested).
regards, vishy
