Google has released a new beta version of Google Maps for most web-enabled mobile phones, including Java, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Nokia S60, Sony Ericsson UIQ, Symbian Motorola devices which uses GSM cell tower ID information to provide users with their approximate location, helping them determine where they are, what’s around them, and how to get there. . The My Location technology also complements GPS-enabled devices, as it delivers a location estimate faster than GPS.

The My Location technology takes information broadcast from cell towers and sifts it through Google-developed algorithms to approximate a user’s current location on the map.

To display this information, press “0″ and look for the blue dot. If you have a GPS-enabled device, this blue dot corresponds to your GPS location. If you do not have a GPS-enabled phone, you may see the blue dot surrounded by a light blue circle which indicates your current location based on cell ID.
