Trapster is a real-time peer to peer speed trap alert and sharing network that allows users to collaborate with others to share warnings of live police speed trap locations. The database contains some locations of static traps (red light cameras and speed cameras), but the real value of the system is in detecting the location of live traps (live police with radar/laser).
The Trapster Mobile application for Java J2ME/Windows Mobile devices requires an external or built-in GPS reciever. Those without a GPS can use the service from a mobile browser using a location based widget from Where.com or through the telephonse using a toll-free number from Jott.
There are four different ways to get Trapster on your Mobile phone:
1) Install the Trapster Java or Windows Mobile program on your phone: Download Trapster for Nokia here, for Blackberry here and for Windows Mobile here.
2) Use Where.com and the Trapster Widget on your phone: After you have signed up for Where, you can add the Trapster widget to your Where library from here.
3) Use Trapster with voice recognition services (no download required): If have an Apple iPhone, any non-GPS cellphone or a carrier locked device where you cannot install any software, you can use Trapster with the free voice recognition services from Jott. Instructions can be found here
4) Receive Trapster live police trap reports via SMS or e-mail (no download required): You can use this option in conjunction with one of the previous three options. You receive SMS alerts of new traps in your city, and then start the Trapster™ program on your mobile phone to get alerted as you approach the specific location(s).
